What did Paul intend for Timothy to do when he told him to 'rightly divide the word truth'?
Define the 'word of truth'.
Did the Holy Spirit help him with this? Or did he depend on what Paul had taught him?
Did he know what was contained in the Gospels?
In verse 9 Paul uses the term "word of God" which I equate to the "word of truth", just another phrase for the same object. Verse 14 he tells them not to strive about words to no profit and verse 16 to avoid vain and profane babblings. The message seems to be in a nutshell - deliver the word of God clearly, concisely, accurately and don't get wrapped around the axle on things that aren't important and don't drift off into conjecture that leads to ungodliness. It reminds me of the warning in James that teachers have a great burden and they will be held accountable for the things that they say.
I Corinthians 2:1-5
"And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God."
